Automotive – EU Officially Enacts EV Tariffs on China

Following an anti-subsidy investigation by the European Commission, the European Union officially imposed definitive tariffs on electric vehicles from China on 31 October 2024. These range from 7.8 percent to 35.3 percent, depending on the manufacturer, in addition to the existing import duty of 10 percent, and are scheduled to remain in place for five years.

Key Details of the Tariffs

The duties are being imposed because the EU determined that China’s EV value chain receives unfair state subsidies and would thus be able to sell its vehicles at artificially low prices, thereby posing a threat of economic injury to European producers.
The additional duty rates by manufacturer are:

  • SAIC Motor: 35.3%
  • Geely: 18.8%
  • BYD: 17.0%
  • Tesla (producing in China): 7.8% – an individually calculated rate
  • Other cooperating companies: 20.7% (weighted average duty)
  • All other non-cooperating firms: 35.3%
